Why Your Mental Load Feels Maxed Out (You’re Not Alone)
Written by Zach Miller on September 16, 2026
Real talk: when’s the last time you felt like you had extra brain space left over at the end of the day? Yeah… us neither. Between school pickups, work deadlines, that one load of laundry that’s been sitting in the dryer since Tuesday, and somehow still needing to figure out dinner — our brains are basically running twelve browser tabs at once, and every single one is playing a different sound.
Turns out, we are so not alone in this.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
A brand new report just confirmed what a lot of us have felt for a while now — our mental load is maxed out, and it’s not letting up.
Here’s what the research found:
- 54% of Americans say their mental load is at full capacity every single week
- 70% of people feel like they’re not doing “enough” each day simply because there’s not enough time
- 25% say they don’t have enough time to talk to the people they love
- 20% say workouts and gym time get squeezed out first
- 19% admit their schedules keep them from visiting elderly family members
That last one might sting a little (sorry, Mom — we see you, and we’re trying).
So… What Do We Actually Do About It?
Nobody said this stuff is easy, but a few small shifts can help take some pressure off:
- Cut the time-wasters. Even 10 minutes back in your day adds up.
- Schedule actual “me time.” Put it on the calendar like it’s a meeting, because honestly, it is one.
- Make checklists. Getting it out of your head and onto paper (or your Notes app) frees up mental space.
- Delegate. Yes, that includes letting the kids fold their own laundry, even if it looks like a crumpled disaster.
Or… You Could Just Scream About It
Here’s the one that made us do a double-take. Scream clubs — yes, groups of people who gather just to yell it out — have been popping up in cities across the country as a stress-relief trend.
And last weekend, it got even bigger: more than 100 people gathered in San Francisco for one purpose — screaming at the ocean together to blow off steam.
Is it a little wild? Sure. But honestly, after the week we’ve all had? We kind of get it.

Let’s Talk About It
Okay, be honest with us — on a scale of “mildly frazzled” to “I might actually need to go scream at Lake Michigan,” where’s your mental load at this week? Drop it in the comments on our Facebook or Instagram — we promise you’re in good company. 😅
