More than just a community initiative-it’s our promise to connect, serve, and strengthen Elkhart County. Thank you to our friends at First State Bank, we are able to spotlight the stories for non-profits and local organizations that matter most to you.

Faith Mission of Michiana

Right here in our community, there’s an organization quietly changing lives one person at a time. Faith Mission of Michiana has been a beacon of hope in Elkhart since 1956, and this month we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible work they’re doing through our “Heart for Hart” initiative.

More Than Just a Place to Sleep

When someone walks through the doors of Faith Mission, they’re not just finding a bed for the night. They’re finding a community that sees their potential and wants to help them rebuild their lives. Faith Mission serves up to 125 individuals daily, providing essential services like shelter, hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, and clothing. But what makes them truly special is their commitment to addressing the whole person, not just their immediate physical needs.

A Path to Real Change

Faith Mission offers comprehensive residential programs that focus on five key areas: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and vocational development. Their approach is personal and compassionate, meeting each individual where they are and walking alongside them on their journey toward independence.

Their programs range from short-term emergency shelter to long-term residential programs lasting up to two years. For those who need immediate help, their innovative Tiny Shelters program provides secure, individual living spaces for up to 90 days, giving people a safe place to catch their breath and start planning their next steps.

Building a Foundation for Success

What happens after someone completes their program? Faith Mission doesn’t just send people out the door and wish them luck. They’ve created the David L. Miller Memorial Village with transitional Tiny Homes for program graduates, along with ongoing support including vocational coaching, pastoral care, and assistance with employment and permanent housing. They understand that true success means helping people maintain their progress long after they leave.

A Legacy of Compassion

From humble beginnings in 1956, when local ministers felt called to help transients traveling through Elkhart, Faith Mission has grown into a vital community resource. Today, they continue that same spirit of compassion, serving families like Tia’s, who returned to Elkhart to care for her mother and needed a safe place for her and her two children when her housing situation fell through.

How You Can Help

As an independently governed nonprofit, Faith Mission relies on support from individuals, churches, and local businesses to continue their life-changing work. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word about their services, our community can play a vital role in helping our neighbors find hope and stability.

This month, we’re grateful to recognize Faith Mission of Michiana as our “Heart for Hart” organization. To learn more about their programs, volunteer opportunities, or ways to support their mission, visit faithmissionmichiana.org or stop by their location in Elkhart.

Because everyone deserves a second chance, and sometimes all it takes is a community willing to extend a helping hand.
