First Day of Fall: 10 Things We’re Most Excited For
Written by Zach Miller on September 22, 2026
Let’s be honest. You’ve had a pumpkin spice candle hidden in the cabinet since mid-August, just waiting for permission. And after a summer of sticky car seats, sunscreen fights, and a kitchen that felt like the surface of the sun, permission has officially been granted.
Today is the first day of fall! We made it, friend. Grab your coffee (iced or hot, no judgment) and let’s talk about everything we’re looking forward to this season.
Cozy Season Is Officially Here
1. Sweater Weather (and Open Windows!)
Is there anything better than pulling on your favorite oversized sweater for the first time? It feels like a hug you didn’t have to ask for.
Even better, it means we can finally open the windows at night and give the AC a well-deserved break. Here’s hoping the “zillion degrees” days are behind us.
2. Apple Picking
There’s something about wandering an orchard that makes everyone feel like they’re in a fall movie. The kids get to run around, you get fresh apples, and somehow you’ll leave with way more than you’ll ever eat.
Hello, apple crisp season!
3. A Trip to the Pumpkin Patch
Picking the “perfect” pumpkin is a serious family negotiation. One kid wants the giant one they can’t lift. The other wants the tiny, lumpy one that “looks lonely.”
Honestly? Both are the right answer. Plus, those pumpkin patch photos are going straight to the fridge.
Fall Flavors, Smells and Sights
4. All the Yummy Fall Foods
This is where fall really shines. Our favorites include:
- Apple cider doughnuts (warm, cinnamon-sugary perfection)
- Everything pumpkin spice (lattes, muffins, you name it)
- Chili and soup nights that practically cook themselves
5. Leaf Peeping
Nothing resets a crazy week like a long, scenic drive through the countryside. Michiana’s back roads get downright gorgeous when the leaves start turning red, orange and gold.
Pro tip: Pack snacks, queue up Froggy 102.7, and let the kids count the “most orange tree” they can find.
6. Those Cozy Fall Smells
If you haven’t tried a fall simmer pot yet, this is your year. Just toss cinnamon sticks, apple slices, orange peels and a splash of vanilla in a pot of water and let it simmer on the stove.
Your house will smell amazing, and guests will think you have your life together. It’s a win-win.
Fun for the Whole Family
7. Football Season
Friday night lights are back! Bundle up, grab a hot chocolate, and cheer on the local high school team.
And let’s not forget the Sunday tradition of yelling at your fantasy football team like they can hear you. (They can’t. We’ve checked.)
8. Getting Lost in a Corn Maze
Corn mazes are the perfect family adventure. Everyone starts out confident, and 45 minutes later you’re following a 7-year-old who swears they know the way.
Spoiler: they don’t. But the memories are totally worth it.
9. Halloween!
The countdown is on! Now’s the time to start planning costumes, whether you’re going family-themed, store-bought, or duct-taping something together the night before.
Do you have your costume picked out yet? No pressure. (Okay, a little pressure.)
10. Rainy, Cozy Days
Sometimes the best part of fall is doing absolutely nothing. A rainy afternoon, a fuzzy blanket, a movie with the kids, and nowhere to be?
That’s the kind of relaxed fall vibe we all deserve.
