Digital Dust Bunnies: Why Busy Moms Are Drowning in Digital Clutter

Written by on April 23, 2025

We all know that feeling – frantically searching through thousands of photos to find that one perfect shot of your kid’s first day of school, or scrolling endlessly through apps you never use but can’t seem to delete. According to a recent nationwide poll by Compass Datacenters, we’re not alone in our digital hoarding habits!

The Numbers Don’t Lie

The survey revealed some eye-opening stats about our relationship with digital clutter:

  • A whopping 77% of Americans admit they’re storing more data than they need (or aren’t sure how much is too much)
  • 63% of us spend our free time scrolling instead of, well, anything else
  • 95% of people say they delete unnecessary files at some point, but only 10% feel confident doing it
  • One-third of people feel overwhelmed, anxious and stressed by managing digital files

Would You Rather…?

Here’s what made me laugh – Americans would rather do almost ANYTHING than face their digital clutter:

  • 59% would rather wash dishes
  • 23% would rather get an annual physical
  • 22% would rather go to the dentist
  • And 17% would even prefer eating liver and onions!

As busy moms juggling work, kids, and everything in between, does this sound familiar? I’m definitely guilty of having 12,000+ photos on my phone while avoiding the dreaded “Storage Almost Full” notification!

The Generational Divide

The research shows younger generations are taking an expensive approach to the problem. Nearly half (49%) of Gen Z and Millennials pay for data storage, with some spending $20-40 monthly. That adds up to a staggering $40,000 over a lifetime for someone who starts at age 25!

For those of us managing family photos, videos, and documents, this hits close to home. We’re preserving memories, but at what cost?

Simple Solutions for Busy Moms

For Earth Day, Compass Datacenters has partnered with Digital Minimalist Kath Younger to help us all clean out our digital closets. Here are quick tips that even the busiest mom can manage:

  1. Schedule 10 minutes weekly to delete photos you don’t need
