Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the author, gaining insights into his creative process and the world of children’s books. This event is a significant occasion for the local community, celebrating the importance of literature in the lives of children. Free family event celebrates the magic of picture books.

If you’ve ever read “Sam & Dave Dig a Hole” or “The First Cat in Space” to your kids at bedtime, you know the name Mac Barnett. And this fall, the beloved children’s book author is bringing his passion for storytelling right here to Elkhart.

Mac Barnett, who serves as the 9th National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature (a prestigious appointment from the Library of Congress), will visit Concord Community Schools on October 13-14. The highlight? A free public event called “Behold, the Picture Book” at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14 at Concord Junior High.

Why This Matters for Your Family

As busy moms, we’re always looking for ways to connect with our kids that don’t involve screens. Picture books offer something magical—a chance to slow down, snuggle up, and share a story together. And Barnett is on a mission to help us appreciate just how special these books really are.

“I think the picture book is one of our great art forms,” Barnett explains in a recent interview. “It deserves a place next to the novel, poetry, plays. We should be so proud of this medium.”

He’s not wrong. Those colorful pages we breeze through at bedtime? They’re actually doing serious work—helping our kids process emotions, understand the world around them, and stretch their imaginations in ways no app or TV show can match.

What to Expect at the Event

Barnett promises an evening of storytelling, Q&A, and a deeper dive into why picture books are designed differently from other books. He’ll read stories aloud (because yes, picture books are meant to be shared with groups!) and help parents understand what makes this art form so unique.

“Kids rely on adults to get these stories, not just buy them but to read them aloud,” Barnett says. “They need us to take them seriously.”

About Mac Barnett

With over 22 years of writing children’s books under his belt, Barnett has created some of the most beloved characters in modern children’s literature. His “Shapes” series, “The First Cat in Space” graphic novels, and award-winning picture books have earned him spots on bookshelves (and in hearts) across the country.

His ambassadorship runs through 2026, and Elkhart is one of only five communities he’s visiting this year—making this a truly special opportunity for local families.
