The Unconditional Love of Pets
Written by Zach Miller on May 6, 2025

A recent study has revealed something that pet parents have known all along – our four-legged family members are worth sacrificing for. According to new research, a staggering 56% of pet owners would actually give up years of their own lives if it meant extending their pet’s lifespan. That same percentage claimed their pets had literally saved their lives in some way.
Mental Health Boost
For busy moms juggling work and family responsibilities, pets offer an incredible mental health advantage. The survey found that almost all pet owners (95%) report daily mental health benefits, with mental health ratings jumping dramatically from 32% to 71% in the A- to A+ range after getting a pet.
This isn’t surprising when you consider how pets can transform our daily lives. They make us smile approximately 11 times per day and laugh about 9 times, according to the research. For moms balancing careers and kids, that consistent source of joy can be the emotional support needed during challenging days.
Trust Beyond Compare
Perhaps the most telling finding is how much we trust our pets compared to other humans. The survey revealed that pet owners are almost twice as likely to trust their pet over their romantic partner (53% vs. 27%). Only 11% said they trusted their best friend the most. And when it comes to instincts, 38% of pet owners trust their pet’s instincts more than their own.
The bond is so strong that separation affects owners quickly. On average, it only takes about five hours away from pets before owners start noticing their mental health declining, with 41% feeling effects within the first two hours.
Celebrity Pet Parents Agree
Even Olympic athletes understand the power of these relationships. Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, spokesperson for pet food brand Nulo which commissioned the survey, shared: “My dogs Lilo and Rambo are my biggest cheerleaders—they’re always there for me, no matter what kind of day I’m having.”
Olympic gold medalist Caeleb Dressel echoed these sentiments about his dog Jane: “She lifts my spirits, keeps me grounded, and makes every day better just by being there.”
What This Means For You
For our Froggy 102.7 listeners, especially busy moms with young children, this research validates what many of you already know – your pet is more than just an animal. They’re emotional support, a constant companion, and sometimes even a lifesaver.
The next time your dog greets you at the door after a long day or your cat curls up in your lap while you’re helping with homework, remember that these moments aren’t just nice – they’re actively improving your mental health and wellbeing.
