The Shocking Truth About Your “Me Time” – And Why You’d Pay THOUSANDS for Just One Day Off
Written by Zach Miller on June 10, 2025

You know that feeling when you’re hiding in the bathroom just to get five minutes of peace? Or when you tell everyone you have a “headache” just so you can sit in silence for a hot minute? Well, turns out you’re not alone – and a new study proves just how desperate we all are for some quality me-time.
The Numbers That’ll Make You Cry (Or Laugh… Or Both)
According to a recent study by Talker Research, the average American only gets 9.5 hours per month to themselves. Let that sink in for a second. That’s less than 10 hours out of an entire month. We’re talking about 2 hours and 20 minutes per week, or just 20 minutes per day.
Twenty. Minutes. A. Day.
Some of you probably spend longer than that in the Starbucks drive-thru!
What’s Stealing Our Sanity?
The biggest culprits? Family obligations topped the list at 50%, followed by work commitments at 32%, and financial constraints at 24%. But here’s where it gets real – 13% of people said they feel guilty for finally getting free time.
Girl, the GUILT! Because heaven forbid we want to exist as human beings instead of just “Mom” or “Wife” or “Employee” for five seconds, right?
The Lies We Tell (And We’re All Guilty)
Here’s the part that had us nodding so hard we got whiplash. Nearly 38% of people admit to lying to partners, friends, or family just to get some time to themselves. The most popular fibs?
- “I’m not feeling well” (54% – We see you, fake sick day queens!)
- “I have a lot of work to do” (40% – Netflix counts as work, right?)
- “I have a headache” (33% – The classic!)
- “I have an appointment” (33% – Appointment with your couch!)
- “My phone’s about to die” (32% – Mysteriously loses signal)
If you’ve never used at least one of these, you’re either lying or you’re a saint. There’s no in-between.
The Price of Peace
Now here’s where things get WILD. The average American would pay $2,521 for one totally free day. But parents? Oh honey, parents would pay $1,147 MORE – that’s $3,668 total.
Three. Thousand. Six. Hundred. Sixty. Eight. Dollars.
For ONE DAY of peace and quiet. That’s more than some people’s rent! And honestly? After thinking about it for two seconds, that price seems… reasonable? (Someone please tell me that’s not just me.)
The study also found that people would pay an average of $340 just for one extra hour of sleep. At this point, sleep is basically more valuable than gold.
What We’d Actually Do With Free Time
When asked how they’d spend precious alone time, one in six people said they’d be happy doing literally anything as long as it wasn’t a chore or obligation. The bar is SO low, and yet somehow we still can’t reach it.
Others said they’d want to binge TV or movies (13%) or spend the day at the beach (12%). Honestly? Sitting in a quiet room staring at the wall sounds pretty amazing right about now.
Here’s a fun fact that’ll make you feel less guilty about skipping family gatherings: Two-thirds of people agreed that visiting family does not count as a restful vacation. Thank you, science, for validating what we already knew!
You’re Not Alone (Even Though You Want to Be)
Over half of people (53%) said they need more alone time than they’re currently getting. So if you’re feeling stretched thin, overwhelmed, or like you’ve forgotten who you are outside of all your responsibilities – that’s completely normal.
The bottom line? We’re all running on empty, pretending we’re fine, and secretly googling “Is it legal to hide in a hotel room for a weekend without telling anyone?”
A Reality Check for All of Us
Look, we get it. Life is demanding. Between work deadlines, kids’ schedules, maintaining relationships, and trying to keep everyone happy, there’s barely time to breathe, let alone think. But here’s your reminder that you matter too.
You’re not selfish for wanting time to yourself. You’re not a bad mom for needing a break. You’re not lazy for wanting to do absolutely nothing sometimes. You’re human.
So the next time someone asks what you want for your birthday, Christmas, or Mother’s Day, maybe just say “Nine hours. Just give me nine whole hours where nobody needs anything from me.”
And if that doesn’t work, there’s always the classic headache excuse. We won’t judge.
What’s your go-to excuse for getting some alone time? Tell us on social media – we promise we won’t tell anyone!
