Free Trick or Treat at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds

Written by on October 27, 2026

Let’s be honest: by the end of October, you’ve already bought the costume, returned the costume, bought a different costume, and hidden the “good” candy from yourself at least twice. You deserve a Halloween event that takes zero planning.

Good news, friend. This one is free, requires no pre-registration, and is safe for the whole crew. All you have to do is show up in costume.

What’s Happening at Trick or Treat at the Fairgrounds?

The Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds is teaming up with local businesses and organizations to host a free, family-friendly trick-or-treat event this Friday.

Kids can walk from treat station to treat station collecting candy, without you having to navigate dark sidewalks or that one house with the motion-activated skeleton. (You know the one.)

The Need-to-Know Details

  • When: Friday, October 30, 2026
  • Time: 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
  • Cost: Absolutely free
  • Registration: None needed, just show up in costume
  • Where: Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds

Pro tip: That 5 PM end time means you can swing by right after school pickup, wear the kids out, and still be home in time for dinner. Maybe even a frozen pizza dinner. No judgment here.

How to Get There (and Where to Park)

This is the part to screenshot! Enter the Fairgrounds through Gate 2 and park outside the Elkhart County Community Center.

Once you’re parked, just walk through the main gate and let the candy hunt begin.

The Costume Contest Is Back!

If your kiddo has been planning their costume since, oh, last November, this is their moment. The costume contest is free to enter and open to anyone under 18.

It’s a photo contest, so look for the picture station inside the park for all the details. And the prize? A Wristband Voucher for the 2027 Elkhart County 4-H Fair. Hello, summer fun, already taken care of!

Contest Categories

  • Spookiest Costume
  • Most Unique Costume
  • Cutest Costume
  • Best Group Costume (all ages can join in, as long as at least one participant is under 18!)

That last one is your sign, Mom. The family group costume you’ve been dreaming about? This is the year. Winners will be announced the Monday after the event.

Local Businesses: Become a Treat Station Partner!

Own a business or help run a local organization? You can be part of the fun by hosting a Treat Station. Partners staff their own station, provide the candy, and decorate if they’d like.

It’s free to sign up, but spots are limited, so don’t wait. You can fill out the Treat Station Partner application on the 4-H Fair website.

Show Off Your Spooky Skills in the Decorating Contest

Treat Station Partners can also enter the fourth annual Treat Station Decorating Contest. Creativity is totally encouraged, with one gentle reminder: keep it family-friendly.

2027 Fair Board President Nick Kieffer will be the judge, and he’ll crown his “Pick of the Patch” winner during the event. We have a feeling it’s going to be a tough call!

Plan Your Halloween Afternoon

Between the free candy, the costume contest, and a safe spot for the little ones to trick-or-treat, this is one of the easiest Halloween wins of the season. For more on everything happening at the Fairgrounds, visit the Elkhart County 4-H Fair website.

👻 Now we want to know: What are your kids dressing up as this year? And be honest, did they change their minds at least three times? Drop their costume (or a pic!) in the comments on our Facebook and Instagram pages! 🎃
