Best Sleep Temperature Revealed – Are You Too Warm?
Written by Zach Miller on August 5, 2026
If you’ve ever fought your spouse over the thermostat at 10pm, this one’s for you 🥶
Real talk: by the time you’ve wrangled kids into bed, prepped tomorrow’s lunches, and finally collapsed onto your own pillow, you have very strong opinions about your bedroom temperature. Turns out, science backs you up.
A brand-new study just settled the debate on America’s favorite sleep temperature, and honestly? The number might surprise you.
So… What’s the Magic Number?
According to the study, the ideal sleep temperature is 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Yep, that’s sweater weather for a lot of us.
And before you crank the A.C. tonight, here’s the kicker: this isn’t just a summer thing. It’s the year-round sweet spot, according to the research from Bear Mattress’s American Sleep Habits Study.
How Does Indiana Compare?
We didn’t make the “coldest” list, but the Northern states are basically sleeping in igloos:
- Massachusetts takes the crown for chilliest sleepers at just 63 degrees
- Rhode Island, Oregon, Connecticut, Vermont, Washington, Maine, West Virginia, New Hampshire, and Arkansas all like it 65 degrees or lower
Meanwhile, our friends soaking up the sun like it a little toastier:
- Hawaii prefers the warmest bedrooms at 70 degrees
- Florida, Texas, Maryland, Arizona, Utah, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, and Nevada all land between 67 and 70 degrees
The “Wait, That’s Me” Stats
A few findings from the study that hit close to home:
- Women are way more likely to overheat at night — 47% of women report it compared to 38% of men, and there’s actual science behind why that happens
- 22% of couples can’t agree on a bedroom temperature (so if that’s you, you’re not alone)
- 78% of Americans sleep with a fan on, and 40% of us run it year-round, not just in summer
Who’s Actually Getting Good Sleep?
Per PR Newswire’s coverage of the study, the states with the best sleep are Nevada, Indiana, California, Vermont, and South Dakota — wait, Indiana made the list! 🎉 Maybe we’re onto something.
The states struggling the most? Oklahoma, Idaho, Wyoming, Arkansas, and Wisconsin.
So what’s your number tonight? Are you a 63-degree Massachusetts-style sleeper, or more of a Hawaii-at-70 kind of person? Tell us your ideal sleep temp (and whether you and your partner actually agree on it) in the comments — we need to know if we’re alone in this thermostat war! 🌡️😴
