Written by Zach Miller on April 8, 2026
Okay, moms — let’s be real. Spring Break sounds amazing in theory. But between work schedules, tight budgets, and two kids who cannot agree on anything, planning a getaway can feel like more stress than vacation. Good news: you don’t have to go far to have an incredible week. Elkhart County is packed with things to do this spring, and most of it is affordable, easy, and genuinely fun for the whole family.
Here’s your go-to guide to Spring Break right here in our backyard. 🌸
🚗 Hit the Road Without Leaving the County
If your crew loves a good adventure but you’re not trying to battle highway traffic, the Heritage Trail Audio Driving Tour was basically made for you. You explore Elkhart County from the comfort of your own car — winding through Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury, Nappanee, Bristol, Wakarusa, and Shipshewana — and you stop whenever you feel like it.
According to the Elkhart County CVB, the trail takes you past stunning views, historical sites, and beautiful Amish heritage along scenic backroads. You’ll find country lanes lined with Amish-owned shops full of handcrafted and homemade goods, plus charming downtown boutiques and artisan stops along the way. It’s sightseeing on your schedule — no tour bus, no rush, no problem.
🌿 Get Outside: Parks & Nature Are Calling
After a long winter, there is nothing better than fresh air and wide open space. Elkhart County delivers on both.
The county is home to six outstanding parks, including the Bonneyville Mill — Indiana’s oldest operating gristmill. It’s a legitimately cool piece of history that kids actually find fascinating (especially when they see it in action). The Elkhart and St. Joseph Rivers wind through the area offering beautiful wildlife habitats, great fishing spots, and peaceful walking paths. The Elkhart RiverWalk, with its scenic footbridge connecting to Island Park, is a perfect afternoon stroll — stroller-friendly and totally free.

🦸♀️ Spring Break With the Kids: Fun They’ll Actually Talk About
Let’s talk about the kids’ wish list, because we all know they have opinions.
Hall of Heroes Superhero Museum in Elkhart is the kind of place that makes kids lose their minds — in the best way. It’s a one-of-a-kind superhero experience unlike anything else in the Midwest, and honestly? You’ll probably love it too.
For the sweet tooth crowd (all of them), a stop at the Wakarusa Dime Store is a non-negotiable. Rows and rows of candy and chocolates in a store that feels like stepping back in time — it’s nostalgic for you and magical for them.
