Remember When Having a Computer Made You Feel Rich? How “Luxuries” from Our Childhood Became Today’s Basics
Written by Zach Miller on January 27, 2026
Remember begging your parents for a cordless phone in your bedroom? Or thinking your best friend’s family was practically royalty because they had a fridge with an ice dispenser? If you’re nodding along, you’re not alone—and you’re definitely showing your age!
A recent viral discussion on social media has parents everywhere taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane, reminiscing about the “middle-class luxuries” from their childhood that seemed like rich people things at the time, but are now completely standard (or totally obsolete).
The Things That Made Us Feel Fancy (That Our Kids Take for Granted)
Technology That Blew Our Minds
Having a home computer was the ultimate flex back in the day. Now? Try raising kids without one. Between homework assignments, online learning platforms, and basically every school form being digital, a computer isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential for survival as a working parent.
And let’s talk about long-distance calling. Remember when your parents set an actual timer during phone calls to relatives out of state to avoid those jaw-dropping phone bills? Now we FaceTime with friends across the globe without thinking twice. Our kids will never understand the panic of accidentally calling long-distance or the luxury of those “free nights and weekends” cell phone plans.
High-speed internet was once an expensive perk for tech-savvy families with money to spare. Today, try working from home, helping with virtual school, or just existing in 2025 without a solid internet connection. It’s gone from luxury to absolute necessity—especially for those of us juggling careers and carpools.
The Home Conveniences We Coveted
Who else thought they’d “made it” when they finally got a home with a dishwasher? Raise your hand if you’re still mildly amazed every time you load one up instead of standing at the sink for an hour after dinner. (Just me?)
Microwaves used to be expensive, bulky status symbols. Now they’re so standard that not having one is actually the unusual choice. Same goes for refrigerators with ice and water dispensers—once the height of kitchen luxury, now pretty much expected in any modern home.
And can we talk about air conditioning in cars? The idea of buying a vehicle without A/C is basically unthinkable now, but it used to be an upgrade that separated the haves from the have-nots.
Entertainment Evolution
Remember when having HBO meant your family was living large? Or when owning the latest gaming console (looking at you, original PlayStation) was something only the cool kids had? Now, between streaming services and gaming systems, most households have entertainment options that would’ve made our younger selves’ heads spin.
Having a TV in your bedroom was once a big deal—a sign you’d really arrived. Today, every teenager has multiple screens: phone, tablet, laptop, and maybe still that TV too.
Physical encyclopedias deserve a special mention here. A full set of Encyclopedia Britannica on the shelf meant your family was both smart AND wealthy. Now all that knowledge (and infinitely more) lives in our pockets, and our kids Google everything instead.
The Completely Obsolete Stuff
Some things didn’t just become basic—they vanished entirely. Cordless phones seemed so futuristic and fancy. Car phones were the ultimate power move. Water beds were peak sophistication. VCRs and Blu-ray players had their moment. All relics now.
The Biggest Shift: The Two-Income Reality
Perhaps the most bittersweet entry on the list? “Dad works one job, five days a week, while Mom is home every day.”
What used to be standard middle-class life now feels like an unattainable luxury for most families. These days, most households need two incomes just to maintain what used to be a one-income lifestyle—even with all our modern “conveniences.”
The Bottom Line for Busy Parents
Yes, we have smartphones, fast internet, and ice-dispensing refrigerators. But we’re also working harder than ever, juggling more responsibilities, and somehow still feeling stretched thin financially.
Maybe the real luxury isn’t the stuff we have—it’s having the time to actually enjoy it. (Says the mom typing this between carpool and dinner prep!)
