Music Still Rules Our Lives: Why 84% of Americans Can’t Live Without It

And why radio is still thriving in 2026

Let’s be honest, mama – between the morning school drop-off, your 9-to-5, picking up the kids from practice, and figuring out what’s for dinner (again), music is probably the one constant that keeps you sane. Turns out, you’re definitely not alone.

A new poll from YouGov reveals that 84% of Americans say listening to music is an important part of their day. Translation? We literally can’t function without our favorite songs keeping us company through life’s chaos.

We’re All Listening – A LOT

Here’s something that won’t surprise you: 55% of us listen to at least an hour of music every single day. Whether it’s your morning commute soundtrack, background music while tackling that work project, or blasting Taylor Swift while folding laundry (no judgment), music has become as essential as our morning coffee.

And get this – only 2% of people say they never listen to music. Who are these people, and are they okay?

How We’re Tuning In

In 2026, the way we consume music looks a little different than it did even five years ago. According to the survey:

  • 73% of us stream music (hello, Spotify and Apple Music)
  • 48% still listen to the radio regularly – yes, RADIO is alive and well, people!
  • 24% download MP3s
  • 24% still spin CDs (we see you, minivan moms)
  • 11% are vinyl collectors
  • 4% are keeping cassettes alive (bless them)

What’s interesting? Despite all the streaming options out there, nearly half of Americans still turn to radio for their daily music fix. There’s something comforting about a real person curating the soundtrack to your day, introducing you to new songs, and keeping you company during that afternoon slump. (We’re looking at you, Zach Attack listeners!)

The Soundtrack of America

When asked about favorite genres, classic rock took the crown with 19% of the vote – proving that Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac will literally never get old. Country music came in second at 11%, followed by pop (9%), hip-hop (8%), and metal (7%).

But here’s where it gets interesting: when people were asked which genre best represents America in 2026, country and hip-hop tied for first place. These two genres – once worlds apart – have actually been blending together more and more lately (looking at you, Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter and Post Malone’s country ventures).

The Grammys: Are They Getting It Right?

With the Grammy Awards coming up on February 2nd, the survey asked if people think they actually recognize the “best” music of the year. The verdict? Only 14% said yes. A majority (51%) don’t think the Grammys nail it, while 35% aren’t sure.

It’s a reminder that “best” music is incredibly subjective – what speaks to you during your afternoon carpool might be completely different from what the Recording Academy thinks deserves a trophy. And that’s okay! Your playlist, your rules.

A.I. Music: Not Impressed (Yet)

About 20% of Americans have now listened to at least one A.I.-generated song, and we’re collectively giving it a “meh.” Only 3% think artificial intelligence can create better music than humans. However, 38% believe A.I. might get there within the next decade.

For now, though, we’ll stick with real artists who pour real emotion into their work – the kind that makes you ugly cry in your car or dance like nobody’s watching while making dinner.

Live Music Still Hits Different

Even in our digital age, there’s nothing quite like experiencing music live. The survey found that 21% of people attend live music at least once a month, while another 23% catch at least one concert per year.

Whether it’s a stadium show featuring your favorite artist or catching a local band at a festival, live music creates memories that streaming just can’t replicate. (And if you need help scoring tickets to shows in our area, you know Froggy 102.7 has you covered!)

The Bottom Line

Music isn’t just background noise – it’s the thread that connects our daily moments, from celebrating the wins to processing the hard stuff. It’s there for your commute, your workout, your kitchen dance parties with the kids, and those rare quiet moments when you finally have five minutes to yourself.

So the next time someone tells you to turn it down, just remember: you’re part of the 84% who understand that music isn’t just important – it’s essential.
