Which States Are Most Obsessed with Halloween?

Written by on October 8, 2025

Is your state ready to trick-or-treat, or are you more “meh” about the spooky season?

If you’re like most moms juggling work, kids, and the never-ending quest for the perfect Halloween costume, you probably have some strong feelings about October 31st. But it turns out, how much Americans love Halloween varies wildly depending on where you live!

The States That Go ALL IN on Halloween

A new survey asked Americans across all 50 states to rate their Halloween enthusiasm on a scale of 1 to 5, and the results might surprise you. The biggest Halloween fanatics are living in:

🎃 Delaware (4.2 out of 5)
🎃 Idaho (4.2 out of 5)
🎃 North Dakota (4.2 out of 5)

Right behind them are Alabama, California, Iowa, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. These states are clearly not messing around when it comes to spooky season! We’re talking elaborate yard decorations, epic costume parties, and neighborhoods that look like movie sets.

Sorry, Arizona… You’re Just Not That Into It

On the flip side, Arizona ranked dead last for Halloween spirit, scoring just 3.7 out of 5. And honestly? We get it. Try trick-or-treating with your kids when it’s still 90 degrees outside! Nothing says “spooky season” like sweating through your vampire costume, right?

Other states that aren’t quite as Halloween-obsessed include Wisconsin, Montana, Hawaii, South Carolina, Nebraska, Virginia, Alaska, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Let’s Talk About the CANDY (Because, Priorities)

Here’s where it gets really interesting for those of us managing Halloween candy duty: The average American buys 4.5 bags of candy per season—and most of us are smart enough to go for those large or party-size bags. (Because let’s be honest, some of that candy is definitely for us.)

Nationwide, Americans buy around 745 MILLION pounds of candy during Halloween season every year. That’s a whole lot of fun-size Snickers!

The most popular types? Chocolate takes the crown (no surprise there), followed by chewy candy and fruity options.

What This Means for Your Halloween

Whether you’re in a Halloween-loving state or somewhere more low-key, the most important thing is making memories with your kids—even if that means handing out candy in shorts because it’s too hot for a sweater, Arizona friends!

So this year, as you’re buying your fourth bag of candy and helping your kids decide between being a dinosaur or a superhero (or both?), know that millions of other parents are right there with you.

What about you—are you team “go all out” or team “just hand out the candy and call it a night”?
