More than just a community initiative-it’s our promise to connect, serve, and strengthen Elkhart County. Thank you to our friends at First State Bank, we are able to spotlight the stories for non-profits and local organizations that matter most to you.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace
Think about the last time you had a truly good night’s sleep. Now imagine one of the kids in our community has never had that — not because they can’t sleep, but because they don’t have a bed to sleep in.
That’s the reality for too many children right here in Elkhart County. And it’s exactly why we want to shine a light on an incredible organization doing something about it: Sleep in Heavenly Peace — or as they’re known around the country, simply SHP.
No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town
That’s not just a tagline. It’s a promise. Sleep in Heavenly Peace was born from a simple but powerful idea — that a bed is a basic need for the proper physical, emotional, and mental support that a child needs. Too many boys and girls in our own backyard go without a bed — or even a pillow — sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. That affects their health, their happiness, and their ability to show up ready to learn every single day.
SHP’s answer to that? Volunteers who roll up their sleeves, head to a build site, and put beds together with their own hands — then personally deliver them to the families who need them most.
How It All Started
Sleep in Heavenly Peace had its start like many other great charities — in a garage. What began as building one bed for one family during the holidays quickly grew into something much bigger when a simple Facebook post asking who else could use a bed was met not just with families in need, but with a flood of neighbors eager to help. That spirit of generosity turned one bunk into a mission.
Today, SHP is a nationally recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit with chapters across the United States, Canada, Bermuda, and the Bahamas. They’ve earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, which means you can feel great knowing your support is going exactly where it should.
Right Here in Michiana
The IN-Elkhart Co. chapter serves Elkhart County and reaches into Eastern St. Joe County — including Osceola, Mishawaka, and Granger. Leading the charge locally is Chapter President Joel Conrad, alongside Volunteer Coordinator Kristy Leininger and Social Media Manager Tanner Hostetler.
And here’s the best part: you can be a part of it.
