Free Friday Night Fun: Curbside Concerts Return to Downtown Elkhart

Written by on May 27, 2025

Let’s talk about something we all need more of – guilt-free fun that doesn’t break the bank!

The Elkhart Public Library’s beloved Curbside Concerts are back for their sixth incredible year, and honestly, this might be the perfect solution for those Friday nights when you’re torn between wanting to get out of the house and not wanting to spend your grocery money on entertainment.

What Makes These Concerts Perfect for Families?

It’s completely FREE. Yes, you read that right – zero admission, zero parking fees, zero guilt about spending money on yourself for once.

The setup is brilliantly family-friendly too. Bands perform on the library’s rooftop while families watch from the parking lot below. Just bring your camping chairs (you know, the ones currently buried in your garage), and you’ve got front-row seats to live music under the stars.

The Spring Lineup That’ll Make You Want to Plan Ahead

Starting Friday, May 16th at 7 p.m., here’s what’s coming:

  • May 16: The Buddy System featuring local favorite drummer Brendyn Cane
  • May 23: Society’s Child (perfect if you peaked musically in the ’80s – no judgment here!)
  • May 30: High Gravity, the series’ “house band”
  • June 6: Lalo Cura bringing Latin rock sensations
  • June 13: Nine2K with all your ’90s and alt-rock favorites
  • June 20-21: Jazz fest weekend featuring The Erly, Anna p.s., JR Clark Band, and Dylan Tolbert
  • June 27: Blues legend Duke Tumatoe closes out the spring series

Beyond Just the Music

Here’s where it gets even better – food trucks and a beer tent. That Guys Gourmet Ribs will be there most Fridays, Loupa’s Chicken brings Caribbean flavors on select nights, and Tropicana Ice Cream Shop has you covered for treats the kids (and let’s be honest, you) will love.

The bartenders? They might even help you find that library book you’ve been meaning to check out. Talk about multitasking!

Summer Plans and Fall Surprises

When the roof gets too hot for summer concerts, they’re launching “Stories and Songs” – songwriter nights starting July 18th. Then the rooftop concerts return August 29th with Abbie Thomas & The Crazy Hearts kicking off the fall series.

The Real Talk

Six years ago, this started as a “bright idea” that survived even when COVID tried to shut everything down. The library saw it as their way to support local musicians through tough times, and honestly, that community spirit shows in every detail of these events.

Pro tip from one mom to another: Check their Facebook page for weather updates because – optimistically – they’re “saying it never rains here in the springtime.” (We’ll see about that, Elkhart!)

The parking lot is fenced and all-ages friendly, with only the alcohol area restricted to 21+. Street parking and nearby municipal lots are available, so carpooling with your mom friends is definitely an option.

Make It a Mom’s Night Out (or Family Night)

Whether you’re grabbing your girlfriends for a rare kid-free evening or making it a family adventure, these concerts offer that perfect balance of getting out of the house without requiring a babysitter budget or formal dinner plans.

Sometimes the best Friday night plans are the ones that don’t require advance reservations, dress codes, or choosing between gas money and fun money.

Mark your calendars, set those phone reminders, and maybe – just maybe – this will be the year you actually follow through on those “we should get out more” conversations.
