The South Bend Fire Department is inviting residents to several open houses on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to mark Fire Prevention Week, which is currently underway.

The theme of Fire Prevention Week 2018 is “Look, Listen and Learn.” South Bend Fire Chief Steve Cox said. “We want to remind residents that with cooler months approaching, people spend more time in the kitchen cooking, where most home fires start. Some tips to prevent kitchen fires are to stay in the kitchen when cooking or to use a timer. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires, and these fires are preventable.”

Predictable risks are reduced when practicing safe cooking, and heating techniques.

“Implementing a few simple measures in your home can prevent injury or death not only during Fire Prevention Week but all year long.” Said Captain Ellis. Firefighters will be on hand to offer suggestions and answer questions.

The following Stations will offer FREE Blood Pressure Checks, Car Seat Checks, Tours, and help design an Escape Plan for your home:

  • Fire Station 1 at 1222 S. Michigan St.
  • Fire Station 3 at 1805 McKinley Ave.
  • Fire Station 6 at 4302 Western Ave.
  • Fire Station 10 at 5303 York Rd.

The South Bend Fire Department has partnered with the American Red Cross and the LOK Wishing Tree Foundation for carbon monoxide and smoke alarm awareness and education.
